Guru of bleak prose, Mr. Misanthrope, has always given me advice on how to write properly. Aspiring novelists and short story writers, maybe he can help you too:

Rule #43: ‘Always put your characters through the worst existential crisis, and then kill them off.’

Rule #52: ‘If an agent tells you the tone of the story is ‘too bleak’, then you’re pissing on the wrong tree.’

Rule #64: ‘If you’re writing a cook book, make sure not to give it a happy ending.’
